The Limestone County Engineering Department provides technical support and direction to the County Commission in all areas of public works construction and maintenance. The Limestone County Commission operates on the district system. We have four elected district county commissioners: Gary Daly, District 1 Commissioner; Steve Turner, District 2 Commissioner; James W. “Bill” Latimer, District 3 Commissioner; and Ben Harrison District 4 Commissioner. Each commissioner is responsible for maintenance of the roads in his district. The commissioners work diligently to manage their resources to ensure the citizens of their districts are well served. These districts are funded by the Gasoline Tax Funds, which are evenly divided among the four districts.
The Engineering Department assists the District Commissioners and Chairman with technical advice and services provided through crews that work countywide. These crews include a paving crew, sign crew, and herbicide crew. The Engineering Department prepares construction plans as needed for roadway, bridge, and other public works projects. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal mandated roadway and bridge inspection regulations, environmental regulations, and other laws pertaining to the construction and maintenance of public improvements. The Engineering Department also reviews subdivision plans submitted by developers and monitors construction of these new subdivisions.
Limestone County’s Legislative Delegation has played a major role in the improvement of the road network within the County. Senators Tom Butler and Arthur Orr, Representatives Henry White, Micky Hammon and Mac McCutchen have worked diligently with County Officials to acquire additional funds for specific projects from the Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and others.
Limestone County has been very fortunate. Through grants and funding arrangements with state and federal agencies, the county accomplished many highway and bridge improvement projects and various enhancement projects. The following projects were completed utilizing funding from sources outside the county funds.
