Sarah Chadwell, Executive Director

Supported by a Grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Governor's Force to Strengthen Alabama Families was created by Governor Bob Riley in February 2004.

The Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center provides collaboration and communication within the Athens Limestone County community by working with families needing guidance and directions.

The Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center also provides Classes on Parenting, Self Esteem for Teen Age Youth, and Healthy Parenting.

The task force was charged to evaluate priorities, delivery structure and cost efficiency of Alabama's health and human services system. In response to this charge, the recommendation to create Family Service Centers in each of Alabama's 67 counties was made.

The recommendation stated that Family Services Centers should be established in each of Alabama's 67 Counties. Thevrecommendation goes on to say:

  • Centers are developed by local communities based on unique community service needs and resources, thus ensuring ongoing local support for its program.
  • Centers mobilize all available public and private resources to support and strengthen families.
  • Centers in all counties foster strong collaborations between public and private services providers at the local community level needed to empower families to move from dependency upon state services to maximum self sufficiency.

Staff members know best when service gaps exist in the community and work to create programs to fill such needs.

Today the Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center operates under those recommendations and guidelines.

“Free Discount Prescription Card”

Limestone County launched a new program that will help its citizens save money on their family’s prescriptions.

It’s called the “Coast2Coast RX” Prescription Drug Discount Card Program.

Some highlights of the free discount prescription card that the County is now providing:

  • The card is FREE - there are no fees to get one. It covers an entire family.
  • The card gives savings of up to 75 percent on brand name and generic drugs.
  • There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on usage.
  • Cardholders and their family may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance or other means. While the card targets uninsured - residents of Limestone County may also use the card if their prescription isn't covered by their health plan or if they have a high deductible plan. Often times a co-pay of $20 or $30 under a health insurance plan may be higher than the price of the prescription using the Coast2Coast Rx card - so residents are advised to check pricing with their insurance versus the discount card.
  • The card can be picked up at participating pharmacies and at libraries, county health facilities and many governmental offices.
  • The card can be printed by visiting
  • The card even works for most pet prescriptions so long as they’re available for human consumption too.
  • There are no health, age or income restrictions; everyone qualifies. Iinformation is confidential and is not used for any other purpose.
